CHOOSE YOUR ABEL TASMAN GATEWAY

Mārahau or Kaiteriteri: where should your Abel Tasman day begin?

The useful starting point is the trip you want to take. Mārahau and Kaiteriteri both connect visitors with Abel Tasman, but they are not interchangeable meeting points.

Start with your booking confirmation

Before arranging a ride, find the operator’s name, exact check-in address and required arrival time. A transfer to “Abel Tasman” leaves too much undecided. Send those details with your request, including whether you need a ticket office, boat departure point or walking entrance.

Choose Mārahau for the southern walking entrance

DOC identifies Mārahau as the southern gateway, with direct access to the Coast Track and options to continue by water taxi or kayak. If you are walking from here, decide where you will turn back or how you will return before choosing your road pickup.

Use Kaiteriteri when your boat departs there

Many visitors begin a boat-based day at Kaiteriteri. Wilsons, for example, directs its day-trip guests to its Kaiteriteri ticket office; other operators have their own instructions. DOC notes that Kaiteriteri is separate from the walking entrance and advises against walking the road connection. Choose the booked meeting point rather than the nearest familiar place name.

Check where the day finishes

A walk and water-taxi itinerary may finish somewhere different from where it began. Write down your final land arrival point and time, then arrange the road collection around it. If your return boat changes, confirm any effect on your transfer with both operators rather than assuming the road driver has been notified.

Ask for the complete road journey

Barefoot takes private transfer enquiries from Nelson and agreed collection points. For a return, supply both legs: outward pickup and destination, then return pickup and drop-off, with dates, times, guests and luggage. Ask for one total vehicle fare covering both agreed legs. Boat trips and activities are separate unless the written quote includes them.

A couple of useful questions.

Can you choose the gateway for me?

Send the walk or activity you have in mind and any booking confirmation. We can discuss the road journey, but the activity operator must confirm its own check-in point and schedule before your transfer is agreed.

Does a private transfer include an Abel Tasman guide or boat?

The transfer enquiry is for road transport. Guiding, water taxis, kayaking and other activities are not included unless expressly agreed in your written quote. Confirm the whole plan before committing to separate bookings.
