CHOOSE YOUR KIND OF COAST

Wharariki Beach or Abel Tasman: which day suits you?

Both deserve time, but they offer different days. Choose around the landscape you want to experience, how you like to explore, and the arrangements you want someone else to handle.

Choose Wharariki for the wild coastline

Think open sand, dunes and offshore rock formations, reached through farmland and coastal forest. DOC describes an approach of around twenty minutes from the car park to the beach. That is the start of the visit, not a complete beach outing. Allow time to explore and walk back.

Choose Abel Tasman around an activity

The Coast Track combines coastal bush and beaches, with walking and water-transport options. Your day might be a chosen walk, boat-based outing or kayak trip with a specialist operator. Start with that experience, then choose the correct gateway and connections. A place name alone does not tell you what the day includes.

Be clear about the Barefoot options

Barefoot’s Wharariki adventure is a guided full-day tour, with return transport, route highlights and shared or private choices for up to five guests. For Abel Tasman, the current offer is a private road-transfer enquiry to an agreed meeting point. It is not a packaged guided park tour or an included water-taxi ticket.

Match the day to your group

Read the actual walking, access and age notes for the tour or activity you choose. Barefoot’s Wharariki tour does not take children under ten. The beach is exposed and DOC advises against swimming there. Abel Tasman suitability depends on the particular walk, boat or activity; check with its operator instead of assuming every option suits every guest.

Give either choice a proper day

Trying to combine both destinations into one ambitious outing can crowd out the experience you came for. Pick a main focus and leave room for the journey, breaks and changing conditions. For Wharariki, review the full tour itinerary. For an Abel Tasman transfer, agree outward and return locations and times, plus a total fare covering both road legs.

A couple of useful questions.

Which one should I choose if I want a guided day?

Review the Wharariki itinerary if you want Barefoot to bring the transport and guided outing together. For Abel Tasman, choose and book the activity you want with its operator, then discuss the road connections with us.

Can I decide according to the weather?

Conditions matter for both. Check the applicable forecast, access advice and operator terms before booking. Coastal features, routes and boat services can be affected by conditions; changing a plan may also affect separate transport arrangements.
