Pick the heart of your day
If Wharariki Beach is your reason for visiting, make it the centre of the itinerary. A day that tries to fit every beach, walk and village can leave little time at the places you came to see. If you want a slower trip or several substantial walks, consider allowing more than a day in the region.
Make room for the road
Tākaka Hill is part of the journey between Nelson and Golden Bay. Think about your comfort with a winding road, the time you want at each stop and your plans after returning to Nelson. Avoid tying an ambitious sightseeing day to a tight onward connection.
A coastal day with Barefoot
Our Wharariki day travels from Nelson through the region, with Riuwaka Resurgence, Tākaka Hill viewpoints and a Tākaka lunch stop along the way. It continues towards Collingwood, Cape Farewell and Wharariki. The route and coastal access respond to weather, tides and the group’s needs; see the tour page for the full itinerary and suitability information.
Choose a different pace
If you have a particular place, occasion or interest in mind, tell us about it through a custom-tour enquiry. We can discuss a private day and confirm an itinerary and quote before you commit. Our own vehicle carries up to five guests; your enquiry is the starting point for agreeing what is possible.
Know which coast you are booking
Wharariki Beach, Cape Farewell and Farewell Spit are different destinations. Barefoot’s Wharariki adventure is not a tour into the restricted interior of Farewell Spit. DOC says access beyond the public part of the spit requires a permit or a licensed operator. Check exactly what an itinerary includes before choosing it.
A couple of useful questions.
Is Golden Bay the same as Abel Tasman?
No. They are distinct areas. Check your actual destinations and transport connections rather than assuming a tour to one includes the other.
What if I only have part of a day?
The Ngarua Caves and Riuwaka tour offers a shorter outing from Nelson, at around five hours. It is a different itinerary, rather than a shortened version of the full Wharariki day.
